Recycling plastic is a lot like recycling paper. The term 100% Post-Consumer Waste can be applied to both. PCW is used to describe recycling "printed" waste that was utilized by the end user.Recycled Pepsi or Coke bottles is a printed plastic and we can keep it out of the landfillsby recycling the plastic and making them back into products like banners. Our banners are recyclable

Protect Our Environment

I started my Environmental Mission at the 20th anniversary of Earth
Day, 1990, after seeing Connie Chung on TV state that 60% of our
landfill problems were due to paper and printing waste. The next
day, I saw 100 middle school kids celebrating Earth Day, marching
around Manhasset and Port Washington on Long Island, NY and I was
hooked. These middle school kids were 14-15 years old and wanted a better environment for their future. At
that time, the Fresh Kills Landfill, in Staten Island, was over 10
stories high with garbage, and had to be closed for fear that the
airplanes would hit their landfill while approaching Newark Airport. Also, barges were sending our NY garbage to distant cities, which I thought was unfair.I
decided that I would concentrate on the most environmental thing I
could do, and that was promote environmental paper and printing that
used 100% Post-Consumer Waste Recycled paper. By using 100% PCW paper,
we were not making matters worse. In 1990, when I started, no one even knew what 100% PCW paper was.YOU NEED TO KNOW THE ENVIRONMENTAL TERMS TO BE GREEN.It
is paper made from previous printed paper, that went to the ultimate
consumer, and was used by those consumers, for it's intended purpose.
A law firm, xeroxing documents that were used in meetings, and now these documents were
no longer needed, is a good example. That is 100% PCW waste. The
decision by the owner of that building or the company itself is three
fold. The waste could be incinerated, sent it to our over crowded
landfills, or made back into new 100% PCW paper, keeping the paper
garbage from increasing our waste problems. ie (recycle it).I chose the latter. By promoting 100% Post-Consumer Waste (100% PCW) paper, I was encouraging my clients to promote recycling the "printed waste". Paper
that is not printed on, like clippings of the paper, when the paper
rolls are cut at the mill, is called Pre-Consumer Waste. This scrap
paper never came near a landfill or incinerator plant. It never creates
a recycling problem. When mills say their paper is 100% recycled,
with 30% Post-Consumer waste, that paper is only 30% recycled. The
other 70% is pre-consumer waste. You need the new paper to be made from
all 100% Post-Consumer Waste, to be 100% recycled.The government
contracts for 100% recycled paper and printing are for 100%
post-consumer waste recycled paper, not a mixture of Post-Consumer
Waste and Pre- Consumer Waste. So, I push 100% PCW, and I have done that for 20 years. I was environmental before it became fashionable. I started at the 20th anniversary of Earth Day. I envisioned the environmental movement, and although the government is not mandating 100% PCW paper yet, I see a lot of firms asking me for it.Using
non environmental paper or 30% post-consumer paper, uses more energy to
make the paper, and a lot more water. Using 100% PCW helps our
landfills, and uses less of our resources to make the paper. My
websites (www.gregbarberco.com) and (www.ecofriendlyprinter.com) are pushing the most environmental paper. We have the appropriate environmental emblems to add to your job. I can send these emblems to you or your designer, electronically. They include.100% PCW100% PCFSoy Inks100% Non Toxic TonerWind E. This is for Wind, BioGas or Solar.FSCIS FSC THE MOST ENVIRONMENTAL PAPER?I say no, But, I say FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), is needed. I would like my clients to use FSC paper that is 100% PCW.FSC
means the mills are not destroying the earth and forests. But, you can
buy FSC paper that is also 100% PCW, and the bleaching of this paper
can be 100% Processed Chlorine Free (PCF).PCF means the paper
is bleached with Oxygen or Hydrogen Peroxide, and not Chlorine Dioxide.
That also means you don't create (Dioxins), and poison our fish,
wildlife and ourselves.Chlorine, mixed with other chemicals in
the paper making stage will create dioxin. 100% Processed Chlorine Free
bleaching, will not create dioxin. Only 100% PCW paper is Processed
Chlorine Free. 30% PCW is (ECF) bleached. That stands for Elementally
Chlorine Free. It sounds great, but is not.So check out the
name of the paper that is marked FSC, when you think you are protecting
our environment. Ask me what I think of your paper choice. Sometimes,
you have no choice, if 100% PCW does not exist in the color paper you
have chosen. I have talked clients into printing the color background
they need on 100% PCW/100% PCF paper, so that my client uses the most
environmental paper.I promote FSC paper that is 100% PCW and
100% PCF. I am guessing 95% of the readers of my blog thought FSC
certified printing meant the printer was using the most environmental
paper and the best bleached paper. And, the mills that make
the paper I promote use renewable energy, when making these grades.
Wind, or BioGas is used at my featured mills. This is substantiated by
Green E certification. The inks we use are soy or vegetable based for offset printing and 100% non toxic toner, for our digital printing. We recycle our waste, and we do not use chemicals in our printing. We
also offer Tree Free Paper, and paper made from Rock & Minerals.
The R & M paper does not use water in making this new line of tree
free paper. You can recycle the rock & mineral paper with your
normal white paper.GREEN TIPS FOR MORE GREEN INFO.More to follow. I will update this section with Green Tips for printing. I say no, Environmental Printing can be less expensive, as long as you follow my advice.SAVE OVER $1.00 PER POUND ON 100% PCW PAPER.We have 100% post-consumer waste paper that is approximately 90 brightness that is half the price of our 96 brightness papers, and the 90 brightness prints as well , and bulks better, and feels like an expensive paper, and is FSC certified, and Green E certified. If you needed 5000 pounds of paper for a brochure, that would mean a savings of $6000. My less expensive paper is $1.00 per pound less to buy.Even at 500 pounds, the savings is $600.WE STOCK 100% PCW in MORE WEIGHTS.Another huge factor is the weight of the paper available. My Enviro line comes in 50, 60, 70, 80, and 100# text, and 65, 80, and 100# cover.Inexpensive newsletters can easily be printed on the 50# or 60# text weights. This means you are saving the $1.00 per pound, and you are saving on the amount of pounds you need. The more expensive 100% PCW lines do not make their grades in 50# or 60#.We have printed Green Maps from Wendy Brawer on 60# text, and the opacity is terrific, the printing is terrific, and the folding is perfect. For a newsletter in multiple pages, or a book, or a brochure that can use lighter paper, you are also saving money on postage, if you are mailing your jobsTHINK OF YOUR FINAL SIZE BEFORE DESIGNING YOUR JOB.I tell my clients that whatever you can fit on up to 500 sheets of 13 x 20 paper, in 4 color printing is a digital job, price wise. You can fit 9 (4 x 6.25) postcards on this size paper, and 24 (2 x 3.5) business cards and 4 (9 x 6.25) flat size Greeting Cards, which folds to 4.5 x 6.25 on 13 x 20 paper.Conversely, you only get 2 (10 x 7) flat size Greeting Cards that fold to 5 x 7. You are losing 50% of the yield by selecting 5 x 7 finished size. The 4.5 x 6.25 (A-6) size is as popular in the greeting card stores as the 5 x 7 size.Multiplying 9 postcards up per sheet times 500 sheets of 13 x 20, and you get 4500 postcards. If you need more than 4500, I would price you on our offset equipment. After 500 sheets, offset printing has amortized the start up costs, and each sheet from that point on, is a lot less money.WE HAVE THE CORRECT PRESS FOR YOU JOB.I partner with plants around the country, and my partners are picked by their environmental stance first, and their equipment second. If you need a 1-2 color, pantone, spot color job, that goes to my offset plant with 2 color presses. If you need 500-2000 business cards and 500-1000 postcards, that goes to another partner. If you need 250 brochures, in page counts, up to 96 pages plus cover, that goes to my high end digital plant, where we feature both Igen's and Indigo presses, andwe have channel scoring and the best folding machines, etc. And, if you have a huge job, we have huge presses.Greg Barber Company, my parent company, is featured in several books for our sustainable printing work. Print and Production Finishes for Sustainable Design, has our work featured in 20 pages of their 190 page book. The clients featured include Jurlique Cosmetics, Feed LLC, the U.N, Diesel, Green Apple Cleaners, Green Drinks, Brian Ponto Design, Mohawk Paper, etcSpeaking of Mohawk Paper, we printed a 28 page plus cover brochure, using 6 different weight papers, that were certified to run on our Indigo presses. We coded each page, so you could feel the paper weight. The printing was superb. You could not tell if we printed on an offset or digital press. The designers use our book like a printed swatch book to show their clients the different paper weights. The quantity we printed was 200 books. This is the type of brochure we move with lightening speed on. For Climate Week, we ran several rush brochures needed for Tony Blair's speeches at the U.N. One of their brochures was for 3000 brochures, 36 pages plus cover, and we delivered in 36 hours.Call me anytime,Greg Barber973 224 1132Emailing me is faster.greg@ecofriendlyprinter.com

Eco Circles Business Cards Make Big Impressions

Eco Circles is a new line of business and networking cards, with a twist. We designed them to be circles instead of rectangles. They look like bar coasters. The best place to put these contact cards is on a bar(s), at Networking Parties.Since the advent of SM For Business is........I decided to call my cards, SM Networking Cards. I know they work better than business cards. I give them out all the time at networking parties, trade shows, seminars, etc. We are adding the appropriate aroma for our Lemon, and Coffee Tree Free SM cards.I print what the paper is around the circumference of my cards, and EVERYONE TRIES TO SMELL THE CARDS. Now, when they do that, surprise, they will be able to smell a lemon aroma, or a coffee aroma, etc. For our Sugar Cane and Mango cards, we are working on the correct aroma next. And brand new, we have added SEED PAPER to our SM Eco Circles. We have the Die, for both 3" and 3.375" diameter circle cards, and the stock we use is any paper we feature. Tree Free, and 100% Post-Consumer Waste (also tree free). You can choose your paper from the coffee plant (3 tone brown), the Mango plant (Orange), the Lemon Tree (brite lemon), the Banana plant (the color of the banana ), and the Sugar Cane plant (Beige). We also have our white 130#, 100% PCW stock. We print your name, address, email, telephone #, etc on one side, and you can either leave the second side blank, for writing notes or prices, or we can print the benefits or any additional information on the back of these Eco Circle Cards.I have tried them out at networking parties and the response to starting a conversation is 10 times easier. GREEN DRINKS ENVIRO COASTERS FOR ADVERTISING.We have expanded our coaster looking cards to be featured at Green Drinks. We have our Eco Circle Design, and our Square Design, with Round Corners. We print the square ones on double thick, 100% post-consumer waste paper. Green Drinks is one of the largest networking groups, and is nationwide. We will be expanding around the country to many of the almost 400 Green Drinks organizations. Our partner group on this media buy, is ecocoasters.com. We can sell you ad space on the coasters and place them on the bar(s) at the networking parties, or we can just sell you the coasters and you can use them at your own networking events.Try a sample run. Call me at 973 224 1132.Like minded, environmental people, gather one evening each month at Green Drinks Parties, and relax for 3-4 hours. We strategically place your coasters, with your ad, on the bars. The bar tenders encourage the patrons to take your coaster home. They are instructed to replace those coasters that have been taken off the bar.We started with Green Drinks NY. Feel free to call Margaret Lydecker, the head of the NY Green Drinks, with any questions you might have. Or, call me and I will find her and she will call you back. The people attending Green Drinks are business people, and if your product or Service is environmental, these people are already predisposed to be receptive to your firm. For a picture of both versions, click Green Drinks at the center of our site, and Eco Circles off to the left side, or click Stand Out From The Crowd at the top.
